American Well Selects First DataBank’s Drug Data for Use in Online Physician-Patient Care Consultations
San Bruno, CA – Dec 17, 2008

First DataBank, a leading provider of integrated drug databases for the healthcare industry, today announced the company’s drug data has been integrated into American Well’s Online Care system, a secure, Web-based platform that facilitates on-demand, real-time Online and phone consultations with medical professionals any time of day.

Through the integration of First DataBank’s National Drug Data File Plus into American Well’s Online Care system, medical professionals are able to access comprehensive drug information for thousands of prescription drugs including a drug’s profile and important safety information such as side effects, drug interactions, official warnings and alerts, and medical conditions associated with a particular drug. In addition, they can file prescriptions electronically through the system. For the first time, the medical professional can consider such information while offering guidance to the patient or suggesting a course of treatment.

”American Well’s provision of on-demand, online and telephone care services meets a rapidly growing need of patients and consumers,” said Don Nielsen, M.D., President, First DataBank. “A vital component of that online medical consultation is access to reliable and comprehensive drug information to ensure patient safety is protected at all times throughout the care delivery process.” I am pleased that American Well has chosen First DataBank as their drug data partner in this important new healthcare service.”

American Well is partnering with health plans to bring a new generation of modern, cost-effective services to the healthcare market. By harnessing the power of consumerism and advancements in communication technology, American Well's Online Care framework allows health plans to dynamically manage care consumption by driving consumer-provider interactions to the member's home, the least expensive of all care settings. American Well and the Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii, announced earlier this year an alliance which allows online care services to all residents of the state of Hawaii, -- 1.3 million people.

First DataBank’s National Drug Data File Plus is one of the healthcare industry’s most widely used sources of up-to-date drug information utilized at the point of care. NDDF Plus helps pharmacists, physicians, nurses and other medical professionals avoid medication errors, prevent adverse drug events, reduce drug-related expenses and improve the quality of patient care.

“This integrated offering will put drug information at the fingertips of physicians during the actual care encounter,” said Ido Schoenberg, MD, Chief Executive Officer of American Well, Inc. “This information, together with other tools and the power of live interaction will provide a broader foundation for physicians who are caring for patients using Online Care.”
