First DataBank Sponsors Webinar to Focus Attention on the Use of Barcoding Technology to Help Prevent Medication Errors
South San Francisco, CA – May 28, 2009
Speakers will Discuss Successful Deployments of First DataBank’s Drug Data Integrated into Pharmacy Barcoding and eMAR Medication Administration Systems
First DataBank announced today that it is sponsoring a webinar on June 10 entitled "From the Pharmacy to the Bedside: Preventing Medication Errors with Barcode Technology," held in conjunction with leading industry publisher Health Data Management.
Statistics indicate that a serious medication error occurs every three hours in a 200-bed hospital and a patient is subjected to a medication error each day they occupy a hospital bed. While errors can occur at any point in the medication process, the last point to catch the error before it reaches the patient is at the time of administration. Barcoding systems hold the promise of driving life saving innovation at this critical last step yet, according to the latest KLAS figures, only 18% of hospitals are implementing barcoding solutions.
The free webinar will focus industry attention on this issue and will feature speakers from two leading hospital systems—Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York and Southern Ohio Medical Center, Portsmouth, Ohio—who have successfully implemented barcode technology in the pharmacy system and at the patient bedside through the use of an electronic medication administration (eMAR) system. Maimonides Medical Center will discuss the barcoding system developed by Pearson Medical Technologies and installed in the hospital pharmacy that provides unit dose and medication labeling. Southern Ohio Medical Center will focus on the bedside barcoding eMAR system in use at their institution developed by Meta Healthcare IT Systems.
Each institution has achieved important patient safety outcomes as measured by the reduction of medication administration errors due to the implementation of barcoding technology — both of which are supported by integrated drug data from First DataBank.
Interested parties may register for the webinar now. In addition, following the webinar, the technologies will be demonstrated at the upcoming ASHP Summer Meeting, to be held in Chicago from June 14 – 17, from the First DataBank, booth 920, Meta Healthcare IT Solutions, booth 620 and Pearson Medical Technologies, booth 623.
